Creating a Works Cited page

When using MLA style, place a list of cited sources, arranged alphabetically, after the text of your essay.  The MLA Handbook recommends that you create the Works Cited section before making your final in-text parenthetical citations so that you will know what information to give in parenthetical references as you write. Doing this makes in-text citation of sources easier by giving you an idea of what in-text reference options will work best for each citation. See the example below for an overview:

Entries follow this basic pattern:
Author's Last Name, Author's First. Book Title
.  City of Publication: Publishing Company, Year. Medium of publication.

Be sure that the information is accurate and correctly placed; even the punctuation must be correct!  If the entry is long and runs onto a second line, you must indent the second line by one TAB space - if you have trouble with the TAB on your keyboard, indent with the spacebar between 5 to 7 spaces.  The entries are spaced like this in order to make the identity of the author totally clear.  Also note that the entries in the above image are in ALPHABETICAL ORDER ACCORDING TO THE AUTHOR'S LAST NAME.  If there is no author present, it is acceptable to place the work in alphabetical order according to the name of the work.  For example, an anonymous guide book entitled Jakarta, Land of 1,000 Islands would be placed BEFORE the novel Cujo  by Stephen King, because the novel would be placed alphabetically under King, Stephen.
